English to Tibetan Online Dictionary

about

This is the first online dictionary to translate English to Tibetan. Many wonderful dictionaries currently exist to search for Tibetan words and find their English equivalent (and a good argument could be made as to why this function may be more important), however in order for any sort of true information exchange you must have two way communication.

The focus of this website will be on modern spoken (colloquial) Tibetan. A few key Buddhist words will likely be included (again, a case could be made for a dictionary that takes a term like "correct view" and gives you the Tibetan "yang dag pa'i lta ba", but that is beyond the scope of this dictionary).

The Tibetan words are listed in Wylie Transliteration. This is, as of now, the most widely used version of corresponding every Tibetan letter to a Roman equivelant. Resources will be listed soon on how to use this system. One important note, transliteration does not equal pronunciation. Using the above example of "yang dag pa'i lta ba", it is roughly pronounced (according Lhasa Tibetan) as "yang dakpay tawa". Plenty of resources on learning Tibetan exist and it is beyond the scope of this website to explain pronunciation. With that said, we hope to someday have links to sound files for the dictionary listings that would be spoken by a native speaker.
